Why Are So Many People Searching for a Naturopathic Doctor?
Over the past several years, more people than ever have been searching online for a naturopathic doctor, naturopath, or naturopathic doctor near me.
Why?
I don’t believe it is because people are suddenly against traditional medicine.
In fact, most of my patients still have a primary care physician, specialist, or other healthcare providers they trust and value.
What I believe is happening is something much simpler.
People want answers.
They want to understand why they feel the way they do.
They want to be heard.
And they want to know if there might be another option before accepting that fatigue, pain, digestive issues, weight gain, brain fog, anxiety, or autoimmune symptoms are simply something they must live with.

What Does a Naturopath Do?
A naturopathic doctor approaches health from a slightly different perspective.
Rather than focusing solely on managing symptoms, many naturopaths spend time asking:
Why is this happening?
Could nutrition be playing a role?
Could a food intolerance be contributing?
Could there be a vitamin deficiency?
Could hormones, thyroid function, inflammation, infections, viruses, or environmental factors be affecting how this person feels?
The goal is not to replace traditional medicine.
The goal is to better understand the whole person and look for factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.
We Believe the Body Is Designed to Heal
One of the foundational beliefs in naturopathy is that the body has an incredible ability to heal and recover when given the proper support.
We believe there is a place for traditional medicine, but why not start with natural healthcare.
There are situations where medications, surgery, emergency care, and specialists save lives every single day.
We are fortunate to have those options available when needed.
However, many people wonder and I don’t blame them:
What if there is something simple contributing to my symptoms?
What if a dietary change could help?
What if a nutrient deficiency is affecting how I feel?
What if inflammation is driving my symptoms?
What if there is a food I react to every day and don’t even realize it?
What if there is something else causing symptoms? Something simple to fix?
Those are the questions many naturopaths ask.
My Own IBS Story Changed the Way I Think
When I was younger, I struggled almost daily with digestive symptoms.
Like many people, I went through numerous medical evaluations trying to find answers.
I had procedures, imaging studies, and gastrointestinal testing that were far from enjoyable.
Yet despite all of that, the missing piece turned out to be surprisingly simple. And it was not found by a traditional medical doctor, it was found by a naturopath many years later.
I had a significant reaction to gluten.
When I finally identified the problem and removed gluten from my diet, my digestive symptoms stopped.
Today we would describe this as addressing an underlying trigger rather than simply managing symptoms.
That experience shaped the way I view health.
Sometimes the answer is complicated.
Sometimes it is remarkably simple.
But we usually don’t know until we look.
My Thyroid Journey Is Another Reason I Became a Naturopath
After my second child was born, I was exhausted, gaining weight, retaining fluid, struggling with brain fog, and honestly feeling a little cranky and frustrated. My energy was low, my thinking was not as sharp as it had been, and despite my best efforts, I felt like I was moving further away from the person I knew myself to be.
I remember sitting in a class one day when another naturopathic doctor looked at me and said something I have never forgotten.
She said, “You have Hashimoto’s. I can see it all over you.”
At first I was surprised.
How could she possibly know that just by looking at me?
But she explained that over the years she had seen the same pattern many times before. The weight gain, the swelling, the fatigue, the brain fog, the facial changes, the overall appearance of someone whose thyroid was struggling.
She encouraged me to come into her office and have testing performed.
At the time, I trusted her enough to listen.
And I am glad I did.
The testing confirmed that she was right.
I had Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Hypothyroidism.
Up until that point, I had repeatedly been told that I simply needed to eat less to lose weight.
The frustrating part was that I was already eating very little. In fact, there were times I was consuming fewer than 1,000 calories per day and still gaining weight while feeling miserable.
Finding the real reason behind my symptoms changed everything.
Not only did it help me understand what was happening in my own body, but it also shaped how I care for patients today.
That experience taught me something I have never forgotten:
People are not lazy.
Many patients are not overeating.
My patients are not imagining their symptoms. I always say my patients are smart.
There is an underlying reason they feel the way they do.
Looking Deeper Than Symptoms
Many people searching for a naturopathic doctor are frustrated because they feel something is wrong but have not yet found an explanation.
In my practice, we often evaluate areas such as:
- Food intolerances
- Vitamin deficiencies
- Mineral deficiencies
- Thyroid function
- Hormone balance
- Cortisol patterns
- Metabolic health
- Inflammation
- Digestive function
- Autoimmune activity
The goal is to understand how well your body is functioning and what can be done better.
Where might support be needed?
What surprises do you need to know now… to stop health nightmares later on in life?
What factors could be contributing to symptoms?
The Growing Interest in Food and Environmental Health
Over the past few years, there has been increasing public discussion about food quality, food ingredients, environmental exposures, and the impact these factors may have on overall health.
People are asking more questions.
They want to know:
- What is in their food?
- Why do certain foods make them feel poorly?
- Why are autoimmune conditions increasing?
- Why do so many people struggle with inflammation?
- Why is there so much heart disease?
These are reasonable questions.
And while there are not always simple answers, many people appreciate having a healthcare provider willing to explore those possibilities with them.
Many Times Emotional Symptoms Are Not Just Emotional
One of the most important lessons I have learned over the years is that symptoms are often connected.
Someone may be experiencing:
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Mood changes
- Brain fog
- Poor concentration
- Fatigue
and automatically assume the problem is purely emotional.
Sometimes it is.
But many times there is an underlying contributor.
Low vitamin B12.
Iron deficiency.
Thyroid dysfunction.
Hormone imbalances.
Blood sugar instability.
Food reactions.
Chronic inflammation.
This is why many naturopaths spend time looking at multiple systems rather than focusing on a single symptom.
Why More People Are Choosing a Naturopathic Doctor
I believe people search for a naturopathic doctor because they want someone to listen, believe them, and help connect the dots.
They want someone to ask why.
They want someone willing to look at food, lifestyle, stress, hormones, nutrients, inflammation, digestion, and overall wellness—not just a single symptom.
Most of all, they want hope.
The possibility that there may be answers they haven’t discovered yet and need to.
And after more than 30 years in practice, I can tell you this:
Many times there are.
