If you have had a gut feeling that your thyroid is off, but your labs keep coming back as normal even though you do not feel like your usual self; guess what? You are not alone. We cannot tell you how many times women have called our office feeling like there is something wrong, but being made to feel like everything is in their head. The truth is, just because your basic labs came back “normal” does not mean that everything is OK.
I went through the same thing; I started to gain weight, lose my hair, and I felt very lethargic. I was brushed off by my doctors and told many different things, from, “You just need to get motivated” to “Hire a personal trainer.” I even explained how my mother had to have half of her thyroid removed, but I would just get a blank look as if “it were in my head.” I was even offered a mind altering anti-depressant prescription, which I thankfully denied.
So, why does this happen to so many women so often?
This is most likely due to the medical range for diagnosing a thyroid condition, plus the problem of T3 levels not being tested. It is very common for most traditional clinics to only test TSH levels and not to check Free T3 and Free T4 or thyroid antibodies. The optimal range for TSH and a healthy thyroid function should be 1.0 – 2.0. Plus if either Free T3 or Free T4 are low, you may be suffering from hypothyroid symptoms, even if TSH is within normal limits.
Years and many pounds later (because I was persistent) my doctor finally tested my thyroid again. I was eventually diagnosed with a hypothyroid. I ended up seeing an endocrinologist who told me that I would end up with Hashimoto’s (which I did end up with) – unfortunately. However, every since I started working here, I started learning more about hypothyroidism. Fortunately, I work for Alane who is a fantastic naturopath, and she was able to help me with my thyroid condition so much that my medication has been reduced to half the dose. She offers the most comprehensive testing for the thyroid and understands what it is like to suffer from thyroid issues. We even have a medical doctor on staff if needed for prescriptions. My hair is growing back nice and full, plus everyone around me is noticing how much weight that I have lost! I have energy and brain clarity again too!
I share all this to give you HOPE because I almost lost hope and started to think, “Well, I guess I will never feel like myself again.” Good news: I have not felt or looked as good in years as I do now that I work for Alane.
