By Alane Palmer, ND, CNC and Michelle TuffsWhy a Gluten Free Diet is Helping So Many People

It’s the Buzz Word, The Hot Topic or perhaps a Fad Diet? However, you say it Gluten Free is everywhere you look! Precisely what is this Gluten anyway? Gluten is the ooey gooey protein found in wheat, rye, oat, and barley to name a few.

Many people find that eliminating Gluten from their diet prevents symptoms of celiac disease. This autoimmune disease is a severe intolerance to even the slightest amount of gluten. The immune system is triggered to attack the small intestine which is why a gluten-free diet is helping so many people!

Gluten sensitivities also cause other people to form rashes on the skin called Dermatitis Herpetiformis or DH. Telltale signs of this rash are that it happens consistently after eating foods containing gluten. This rash usually is symmetrical, meaning if you have a bumpy, itchy rash on your left arm you will likely have the same rash on your right arm!

People with gluten sensitivities may feel bloated, maybe have symptoms of IBS, gas and/or constipation. They can also have non-gut focused symptoms like brain fog, pain, headaches, hair loss, fatigue, insomnia and more. If gluten sensitivities are not dealt with, the person can develop severe nutritional deficiencies such as anemia, osteoporosis, extreme fatigue and in small extreme cases lymphoma of the small intestine.

A gluten-free diet has been helping many people when there is any sort of autoimmunity. Read some of the autoimmune cookbooks for more guidance on this issue. There are so many testimonies of people eating a gluten-free diet and halting the attacks caused by autoimmunity.
