I wish I had heard about foods that cause acne between acne growing up. It would have saved me a lot of embarrassment and heartache as a teen and young adult. I was like every other young girl growing up. I started my day out with a sugary cereal like Fruity Pebbles or Frosted Flakes, used regular milk (from a cow), drank a glass of milk, and ran out the door to school. Lunch was a sandwich on white or whole wheat bread and varied from peanut butter and jelly to turkey and cheese with mayo. Snack after school was either a ring ding, Susie Q, twinkie, pop-tart, etc. You get the idea. And dinner was anything from pot roast and egg noodles (wheat-based), hot dog casserole with egg noodles (wheat-based), or fast food that usually consisted of a milkshake for dessert.
As I entered the puberty “change,” I started to get these red things on my face, and they hurt. Mom said they were acne, and she bought me some over-the-counter medication which worked to a point. As I got older (in my 20s), I still battled acne, but as I started to learn more about foods that cause acne and how food reactions affect the body, I wondered. Do I need that expensive acne crème, OR could it be that food causes acne in some people like me?
The more I read, the more I was fascinated by how the body responds to food. Dairy, peanut butter, and sugar were just 3 of my acne-causing foods. Even today, I have friends who come over who stay away from dairy or gluten and say there are foods that cause acne for them, too! that food causes acne for them.
I giggle and ask my mom, now 40 years later, what would you have done if you knew in the 70s and 80s I had all these food reactions? She said I would have starved! Today it is so easy to find substitutes for food that causes acne. For example, if I am in a dairy mood or an ice cream mood, I eat a little of the ice cream made from coconut milk or almond milk. And if I have a week where I only want a pizza for dinner, I buy a PALEO pizza crust, use DAIYA cheese and add spinach, onions, and protein to it.
I also make sure my makeup is not made from wheat, or I will be itchy. I found that even things I put on my face will cause acne breakouts.
I am sorry to answer the question, “Are there Foods That Cause Acne?” YES is the answer, but learning a healthy food elimination diet and/or doing food intolerance testing can give YOU ALL the answers for clear and beautiful skin!
I am not in my late 50s and only get a pimple if I overeat dairy, sugar, or get “glutened”. I also avoid peanut butter as I enjoyed a peanut butter day with my son one day and realized peanut butter is one of the foods that cause acne for him and me too!
