What do you picture when you think of a nutritionist? Most would think of a dietary consultant, or an expert on food. What, then, is a holistic nutritionist? According to the dictionary, Holistic is an adjective and means:
Holistic: Characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.
Holistic Medicine: Characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.
So what does this mean as far as nutrition? What can I expect from a holistic nutritionist? Holistic nutritionists take a whole body approach. Conventional practitioners tend to take a “one pill per ill” perspective, being symptom focused rather than person focused. A holistic nutritionist looks at the body as a whole and believes that with this perspective you are able to teach the body to heal itself, naturally, which is more efficient than treating symptoms as they appear. This “root cause” approach leads to getting you feeling better and staying well, rather than having to return to a doctor every time a symptom presents itself.
Common things to expect when meeting with a holistic nutritionist:
30-60 minute appointment time full of personalized lifestyle questions
Appropriate “root cause” functional lab testing based on symptoms and medical history
Diet and supplemental guidance based on functional range on test results
Detailed and personalized protocol based on test results
