When I was very young, I was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome. Mom took me to the pediatrician many times during a month. He would smile, tell me that it was irritable bowel syndrome and discuss medication options. He also ordered several bowel tests for me. It was pretty traumatic for a young girl getting a colonoscopy, upper GI, lower GI, barium enema, and being told nothing was wrong. It was very frustrating and confusing.
I was so scared to eat. It seemed like every food I ate could be a trigger for the irritable bowel syndrome symptoms. One day I would have loose stools, the next day just some stomach cramps and the next I would have constipation. Life should have been fun during those years but instead, it was filled with belly aches, fear and what I call “food confusion”.
When I opened Nutritionally Yours to serve the Atlanta community my initial desire was to be a nutritionist that really understood food and how it affects the body negatively or positively. When I was growing up, I wish I went to a nutritionist that could have taught me what it took years to learn about food! But back in the 80’s and even the 90’s, it was not known a lot on how food can cause irritable bowel syndrome. When I moved to Atlanta, I started meeting health conscious people. I began taking classes in nutrition, and my eyes were open wide to what was causing my symptoms plus other people I know. For me, gluten was the #1 cause of my irritable bowel syndrome. I removed the gluten grains and no more tummy aches! It is so easy!
When I see patients at my clinic that are suffering needlessly with irritable bowel I run food testing to identify the triggers for their symptoms. Other times I may run a stool test to make sure there isn’t a nasty pathogen in their gut. Whatever the cause, we usually can find it.
